2005 - Kaesler Shiraz Old Vine Syrah

Excellent!

Great structure compared to other vintages.  This is a wine that based on the value I would buy a case of.  Lovely floral and cinammon nose, which is followed by an even lovelier strawberry and blackberry dominated palate.  The spice and vanilla oak are in the background cheering the fruit on! This is the best of the Kaesler!

Middle Ground

Good but I wouldn't think of it as my first choice! It has loads of cherry and blackfruits, some oak, but not too much for me, and wow, a slap in the face of alcohol like I took a shot of vodka, velvety at first but dissapointed in the finish, mouthfeel was medium bodied but then faded away quite quickly and then you get the alcohol, which is too much. I didn't decant, maybe that would help. Overall, I'd definiately drink it again but probably won't go out of my way to do so.

Solid

Good fruit and big vanilla oak win me over. The nose is fruity, jammy, vanilla bean, motor oil, alcohol. The taste profile is cherries, raspberries, "cough medicine." This was a big wine with a strong flavor. It was vert smooth, but you can definately tell that there is a lot of alcohol. The flavor was not overly fruity, there was good balance, but I wish the finish had been longer.

very typical of an Aussie shiraz. It is delicious, offering super jammy notes and amazing density. For me though, it just falls short on several levels, offering little to no complexity as well as very pronounced alcohol on the finish. The noticeable lack of tannin, coupled with a general sense of being out of balance, suggest this wine will fall apart in less than two years. Enjoy now!

Typical Aussie Shiraz but good. This is another big, in your face, in a very new world way (Fruit Bomb). Tons of dark berries, cinnamon, cloves, some coffee, and dark chocolate. The alcohol is a little intense, but so is the fruit.

Again my only complaint is the price. It has a very dark color. Candy and fruit nose with something slightly floral going on. Black currant and lots of plum with a very faint bit of chocolate. Nice long finish. Drink with those who can appreciate or invite me over!!!

Good as it gets

1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
My only complaint - the price.  This wine is rich, chewy, full-bodied, and pleasingly tannic. Some might say the finish is hot, but really, it leaves a dark cherry, jammy taste, then sparkles. It is not a complex or nuanced wine, and it is not for those in a mood for a sophisticated, layered burgundy. But it does deliver a powerful, satisfying fruit-forward burst of flavor -- with a very subtle alcoholic lift.

This vintage disappointed me a lot, especially after the delicious 2005. One dimensional fruit bomb does sum it up pretty well. Although that dimension isn't as amazing as I was hoping. This is one step up (and a big price increase) from the other Mollydookers. Try two left feet.

I loved this more than most of the other Mollydooker wines. It was a wonderful Shiraz blend, and will probably start costing a lot more than it does currently. Delicious, inky purple, structurally sound, peppery wine, just like I like it. Big vanilla oak too.

Better

Jun 09, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
This was much better and more enjoyable than the 2005. I tried it without the "Mollydooker Shake" and it was very thick (syrupy) and luscious. Tastes of dark chocolate and mint rolled off of my palette. Second, after the "Mollydooker shake" it was a little more smooth and drinkable. It's still got a huge thickness to it, but there is a tameness about it now. Plus, it has these cool bubbles that form after you shake it in the bottle!

Just ok - pass compared to others. This was a very big wine that seemed thick, but it was smooth and enjoyable. I was a little underwhelmed after all of the other Mollydooker wines. Good raspberry but too much alcohol.

Good but overpriced

Jun 09, 2008

This is an excellent wine, but it is still too expensive. It had rich tannins that made my tongue tingle (or was that the alcohol?) and I could definately tell that there was more alcohol than usual. It wasn't imbalanced, but there was a somewhat "hot" sensation on my throat. The flavor was slightly woody, dark fruits, maybe some pencil shavings, and maybe I'm crazy but I could taste a kind of buttered popcorn flavor as well. Interesting but overpriced.

This is yummy stuff! Sweet smell on the nose. When I first opened the bottle to decantor, I thought that the wine had a bread smell to it (like sweet yeast rolls). Flavor is dominated by blackberries and pepper. The flavor was quite different that what I expected after such a sweet nose.

OK

This was the wine I was most excited about and yet it fell the shortest on my palate. I'm not sure what all the hype is about. It is certainly big, fruit-forward, and spicy. There is not an ounce of subtlety in this wine, and it does not display a lot of balance. The high alcohol content (16%) is really not noticeable. I've tasted many better shiraz-focused wines at this price.

This wine is almost perfect in my humble opinion - even more satisfying than the 2005.  You have to love the super fruit bomb style to love this wine but if you do, you will love it! This wine packs so much flavor it's absolutely mouthwatering but not overly tannic. The best flaovr description I can give is that it tastes like opening a whole pack of starburst candies and eating them all at once.

This is an amazing wine with a big price tag. It is simply delicious. The nose is a great combo of sweet cherry/raspberry and leather. Nice tannins - not too strong. A bit of spice on the finish. Silky sweet and hot, but the fruit more than handles the high alcohol content. Probably not a very good food wine, but absolutely tremendous solo drinking.

This is almost a really good wine. Nice structure balanced tannins, but a tad hot, the alcohol barely stands up to the fruit and leave a bit of a bitter aftertaste in your mouth. The wine is luscious and velvety but overall, suffers from a bit too much alcohol all over the palate.

Not as well rounded as the blend. Very fruity...black fruit explosion, currents, blueberries, blackberries. The nose smells thick and deep (if that means anything to you). Slightly leathery but the fruit compensates. Best to drink now.

Another great vintage - cannot wait for the 2007 and on! This blend is full and friendly, with less power than "The Boxer" but more layers of flavor. It's fruit-forward but not sweet or jammy -- pleasantly tannic, with a surprisingly smooth finish for so much alcohol.

Great Aussie blend! A strong bouquet of delicious cherry, leather, spice and plum. The full body swirls nicely around your mouth while not too thick. Lots of fruit dominates this wine and sweetness helps balance against an immense spicy bite. The tannins were soft and sumptuous in the bottle.

This vintage surprised me. It had that great Napa Cab nose of cassis and black currants, and on the palate the wine showed really interesting earth, black licorice, black cherry, and just a hint of saddle leather. Finish was long and mild, and the tannins are mild and well integrated at this point. This one has to have 5 years left in it, but probably not much more.

A little more green in this vintage, but not too much.  Very nice grapefruit and bell pepper on the nose turns to kiwi and grass on the palate. A great wine, but most of these Whitehaven SB's are starting to all taste the same to me, which can be both good but also boring.

Great value that delivers again. It has explosive grapefruit on the nose (more pink really). I love the spritz on the palate. You get a great pure rush of kiwi, pineapple, lime, gooseberry, and green apple. Very tangy and acidic but not overly so. Everything is in nice balance. The score would be much higher if the flavors would just stay longer. Great Value!

Good Wine but not complex

Jun 09, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
This is another good wine from Whitehaven. The nose on this wine is citrus, and the taste follows suit. Grapefruit is the predominant taste, and can be overwhelming if one doesn't love grapefruit. It is inoffensive in taste, and the crisp fruitiness makes up for the short finish. I would recommend it to those who like crisp, cool, fruity wines. If you're looking for a strong, complex wine, however, look elsewhere.

The price this wine demands, it cannot deliver for this vintage. It is once again  very smooth in texture, this wine certainly has a lot going on. Nose resembles a new world version of Cotes du Rhone, with some bright cherry fruit and some brambly garrigue type flavors. The offputting part of this wine comes in the very obvious grape kool-aid nuances that come through on the palate. Some might find this nice, very "new world," but it was not my favorite.  Pass based on price.

This wine shows some very nice cabernet character and shys away from some of the austerity that for me has been the hallmark of a lot of 2003 Napa cabernet. Tannins are firm but not green or tough, they seem "ripe" enough. Finish is impressive. I would drink this wine from 2009-2011 so the tannins have a chance to further soften, but the wine will still be youthful enough.

Alcohol kills it.

Take the alcohol down a notch and this is a 4 star wine perhaps. Overripe raspberries and chocolate on the nose give way to raspberry ganache and ruby port on the palate and finish, where it turns a little hot. This wine fades quickly in the glass, and the alcohol begins to dominate.

Loved this wine, but it's not quite ready.  This one took several hours in a decanter before really showing its stuff. Shows a nice nose of earth, cassis, and blackberries, it is the berry aspect of the wine that really shows through with some air. The tannins are firm and extremely well integrated; all-in-all, it is the superb balance of the wine that really makes it great. Finishes a bit short, but that is my only real criticism of the wine. Very complex wine. It has a very nice nose of crushed berries, earth, and slight hints of tar and violets. I liked it. Medium bodied and very well balanced, this is not a powerhouse of a wine, but it has a lot going on and remains fresh and vibrant. Blueberry notes up front with maybe a hint of smoke on the midpalate. Decent length on the finish.

Ok

Not bad it, it was just ok for me. It's very bacon heavy which is an odd profile for an AUssie Shiraz. It's crazy jammy sweet, and it has just a hint of pepper (and, since it's still young) a big alcohol burn on the back of your throat in the finish.

It was bad and young but mostly bad. Although this is from the 2006 vintage and is still very young, it just doesn't come off like a wine that is going to improve in the bottle. Flat fruit and lots of alcohol. Oak doesn't help either.

This wine was off to a good start but disappeared by the end. On the palate, an enjoyable fruit bomb of purple paint splattering all over. Sugar was certainly there, but not too bad. Some secondary flavors of leather and blackberries were there. Almost nothing on the finish.

This wine was too fake. The smell really reminded me of Hi-C Grape Juice, that is to say, again it was just too much fake fruit. After 2 hours of decanting, some other flavors of ripe blueberries and perhaps a little bit of leather came into play.

This was very good. This wine really fascinated me - somewhat muted nose, but on the palate, a rush of tart lemon, green apple, and a hint of rich caramel came through. The finish was amazing - really hung around on the palate, where the lemon notes persisted and a hint of ginger came through.

Good Pinot

I enjoyed this pinot and thought the price was just right. It's very serious with the flavor, I would describe this wine as "obvious," as the classic cherry and baking spices are right out there. Certainly not a bad thing - this brought some density without seeming over-manipulated or out of balance. A good wine to drink over the next couple of years.

This wine was great for immediate consumption. Itt was showing some menthol, blueberries, and some floral character, I thought this was a pretty nice wine. This is a very pretty merlot from Sonoma in a very off vintage. It's showing great cassis and dark fruit character, with a hint of spice. On the downhill slide as far as youthful exuberance is concerned, it will probably slowly fade over the next 2 years.

Some will disagree with me on this but I thought this was better than the 01. The streak of blackberry running through the middle is just great, and the firm ripe tannins serve as a reminder that this is still just a baby. Great balance for 2003 - some of these "Super Tuscans" are just overdone in this vintage, but I liked this one a lot.

I thnink this was cooked unfortunately. Had some nice earth and mushroom notes backed up by rough, young tannins. Medium bodied and certainly robust, this wine to me was marred by an unfortunate cooked fruit character - something I have come to associate with improperly stored wines. I want to think this is a better wine than the bottle I had, so hopefully I get the chance at another bottle in the future. I have absolutely loved other vintages of this wine.

Nice organic wine. When I first opened the bottle and poured a glass, the wine struck me as almost floral on top of the fruit. About an hour later it opened up to a lot of strawberry; a bit on the jammy side, here. It even reminded me of IHOP's strawberry syrup. All in all, it's a nice effort for organic wine and with this price I had to score it a little higher than I would have if it were more expensive. GOOD!

This vintage wasn't as solid as the previous ones. It's just not as good as the 2003 in my opinion. It has spice and dark berries and earth.  I didn't have it open long... perhaps after a little time open it'll get better. Good Producer.

This was the weakest of the bunch - over the years this wine has gotten better or my palate has changed.  Its finish was really short (almost non-existent) and the oak flavor got stronger the longer the bottle was open. It certainly isn't bad, it's just not interesting.

Not the 2003.  Mid-palate shows some green pepper and unpleasant menthol, which blows off to leave a pleasant and surprisingly long finish. A decent choice for a non-descript dinner wine but I'd spend a few more bucks and get something better - or spend the same amount and get the 2003 vintage of this wine.

Another good vintage that brings a nice clear magenta color. Dusty fruit with a whiff of jalapenos/bell peppers and some other vegetal aromas (asparagus?). I can honestly say that the best thing about this wine is it's pure varietal character that most California Cab at this price point lacks. Cassis, cherry, tobacco, bellpepper, vanilla and a hint of moca and blackberry, all singing in harmony. I think this is terrific house wine for parties that will please wine snobs and monkeys alike.

This wine is slightly disjointed now, but came together after about an hour and a half in a decanted. First hour; loads of rich blackberry, which slowly gave way to notes of cherry and almost casis like flavor. I'm admittedly poorly tasted on older vintages of this wine, but I think it will pull itself together in a year or so time. Could be great - could land on its face.

This is certainly not a bad wine, it's just not interesting enough to merit more than 2 stars.  Every other $20 shiraz will delivers what this wine delivers and more.  Spice, dark fruit, and some smoke - which again isn't bad but this one is on the light side for all of those componets.

2004 - Spice Route Pinotage

Nice Spice

Well - you either like pinotage or you don't!  I like it but, in moderation.  This wine has the cinammon, and cedar box dominating the palate.  The plum fruit is soft and resonates in the back of your throat.  This wine will stay strong for another 4 to 6 years.

The combination of cab and merlot in this slick cool wine, is a great combination.  The cab delivers the power and fruit that I like to see from Australia, and yet the merlot gives it some elegance and finese - making sure the cab doesn't overpower.

Cool Limestone

Apr 30, 2008

This wine is very sleek for an Australian Shiraz! The limestone coast keeps this wine a little bit racier than most Aussie Shiraz.  The spice and dark fruit are beautifully wooven together with a good amount of length.  This wine would probably surprise a lot of people at a blind tasting.

Great Blend!

As long as you love wines that are over the top, then this is a wine to buy!  Great Fruit that explodes and overpowers your palate.  Big Tannins that will be left over once the wine has finished.  This is an immediate pleasure wine - don't bother waiting too long to enjoy.  Merlot smooths wine out somewhat.

This wine has a good upper body! Very strong wine with very short thick legs!  The dark fruit and tight earth flavors dominate the palate.  A little bit tart, but overall a good showing from this producer. Beautiful bottle too.

Decent Value

A little bit on the lighter side (even for a pinot gris).  The minerality and light pear and apple make this an easy wine to pair with food, however most foods would over power the wine. It's a good price but pinot gris is too light for me as a general statement, and this one is one of the lightest.

Don't Buy

It's oak, it's oak, it's oak, it's - ok you get the point.  Any fruit that was with this wine has long since past, but I don't think it ever had any. It's like drinking a tree with bell pepper juice squeezed all over it.  It's out of balance, and a total disappointment even at $20 - half the normal price.

it's a $10 wine, and it tastes like a $10 chardonnay.  It's fine for what it is, but don't expect anything else.  Butter, oak, and a slight crispness that allows it to have enough character to recommed to friends.  Not much else to say.

Laid Back

Apr 28, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
This wine isn't trying to impress you - it's just laid back, and says "Hey if you like me great - if not, that's fine too."  You can't help but like it for the money.  A little bit lighter than I prefer but overall it has a good balance, nice acidity and doesn't stick around on the palate too long (which I prefer with wines of mediocre pedigree).

Adam Lee is a wonderful winemaker, and his line of Siduri Pinots are almost 100% hits, but this one shines even more than most.  The fullness of this pinot, with the cool dark fruit that lingers on the palate and velvet tannins, all combine to make this an unbelievable pinot for under $50.  I love pinot that doesn't need food.

Good

Cola is a dominating factor in this wine, but it integrates very well with the srtawberry and light raspberry fruit.  The oak is pretty hidden which is a nice surprise.  This wine has great acidity which will help it pair well with a lot of different foods.  Drink young.

Disappointment

This syrah was at a nice price point and from a great producer but it fell extremely short of my expectations. Too fake and over oaked.  The tannins were too loose and it was an overall flabby wine. Big Pass.

A fun wine, that works as a good gift.  It needs a little time to breath to wear out a couple of kinks. It's got decent fruit, and nuttiness, but cola flavors and mouth feel dominate the wine and that's not for me.  But it's still enjoyable, and a different wine.  Some would argue 3 stars - maybe they're right.

Solid Wine - Great Producer

I am a huge fan of Justin, and this wine delivers beyond it's $20 price point.  It's a well structured wine that has nice red fruit, raspberries, vanilla, tobacco (not smoke).  This is a much better buy than most other $20 California Cabs. This wine is meant to be drank within the next 5 to 7 years - I don't think it will improve that much with age.  It's a young wine - treat it as such.

This wine was exceptionally enjoyable, and a very nice chardonnay.  It had a little butter and some slight oak, but it also had a wonderful balance, nuttiness and lively crispness to it.  This is an excellent salmon wine.  It has the strength and subtly that pairs well with just about any fish.

Too Old

This wine was still drinkable a year and a half ago, but it was still past its prime even at that time.  By now the color has to be an orange golden, and the flavors have gotten too flabby to conquer the alcohol.  Originally this may have been an excellent wine, but now it's just old and ready to be drunk.

Great Experience - O.K. Wine

Apr 26, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
The first time I got to try Opus One - it was at a friends cellar and was the unbelievable California Vintage of 1997.  I had always wanted to try Opus One and it was kind of an inside joke for me and some friends, so when he pulled out this bottle and this vintage - I couldn't believe it.  It was an incredible experience but it was just an ok wine.  It was very silky, cedar box, cherry fruit - but it's over oaked and just too California Cab typical to consider it as 4 stars.

Better than expected

This is much better and has a lot more structure than the Bitch wine that is also gimicky in the same vain, but still a little overpriced.  If this wine was $10 like the Bitch Grenache, then it would be a great value wine, as it is, this wine doesn't deliver anything special for the price range.  Good fruit, although over-the-top, more subtle alcohol on the palate but not on the head.  It's a warm wine, that invites you in - but you're not spending the night.

Gimmick - But not bad

Apr 26, 2008

This is obviously a marketing ploy, and not a bad idea for a name and label (pink).  This is sure to sell as a gag wine, or as a bachlorette gift, or just a nice way to break up with someone.  However the wine falls way short of being considered a quality Grenache.  It's not bad, just gimicky in its taste.  Fake fruit, high alcohol, and over-the-top acidity.  Better than any other gag gift you'll ever give though!

Good Spanish wine

Apr 26, 2008

The price point is about right for this wine, but it still doesn't deliver the quality that the hype behind it commands.  Good wine with food - very tight wine that will benefit from cellaring.  The alcohol comes through on this wine hiding behind vanilla oak - which you see in a lot of Spanish wines.  The fruit is solid but it can't disguise the alcohol.

Wine Spectator tanked this wine and Parker put it in the low 90's but for me it's somewhere in between.  Not up to the typical quality of this wine but still a solid effort.  Vanilla oak, tobacco, and strong tannins dominate the wine.

Good classic claret.  Interesting vintage for bordeaux but this wine delivers.  The nice cherry and light blackberry flavors roll over the palate carased in a velvet wrapper of tobacco and spice.  The fruit has somewhat faded on this wine but it still stands true.  Worth the taste!

Much more structured and tighter tannins than most spanish wines but that just gives it the support to last longer than 5 years unlike most spanish wines other than rioja's that fall short after only a short period of fake fruit and vanilla.   This wine needs to open up more, but it still has so many interesting flavors of cocoa, cherries, rasperries, plum and tobacco - nice finish too.
