2001 - Dehesa la Granja  Proprietary Blend

Great Dehesa Granja

Apr 14, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
A very dense, spicy, minerally black fruit bomb of a wine. .. with dense color, nice structure and gripping tannins. This is a wine that will stain your teeth and put one heck of a smile on your face. Should age well for another 5 to 6 years.

2001 - Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese Grosso

WOW! This is THE BEST BRUNELLO EVER!

Apr 14, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
The benchmark for 2001 Brunello, the Casanova di Neri does not dissapoint. Big bold black fruit, with a nice touch of oak and bracing tannin. This is a SUPER big wine. It's almost black in the glass, with a lush mouthfeel and an extremely long finish. It's no wonder it was the number 1 wine of the year in 2006. Does it get any better than this?

This syrah is wonderful. Big sweet juicy fruit on the palate, a touch of oak and loads of flavor. This is a big wine and should be paried with hearty fare. I wouldn't say it's very complex ... definitely CA syrah, but I love it.

Amazing Rhone

Wow! 2005 Rhone is where it's at. . . even at this price point. This wine has wonderful minerality, fruit and depth. It's smokey and earthy and has a nice medium body . . .needs some time in the bottle.

I normally wouldn't pay more than $15 for rose, but I make an exception for Bandol Tempier. This wine has depth, structure, lovely acidity, balanced fruit and a surprisingly rich mouthfeel. Great spring and summer wine.

What a bold wine. This is juicy, big, fruit forward and bold! Almost new world in style. Some minerality, hints of oak and a bit racy right now. Should be excellent in 3 years. Great value for the price!

Nice everyday drinking wine. Medium bodied, no oak...lush and modern in style. Lots of black fruit-blackberry, blueberry and cassis. Not a wine for the cellar, for this prcie, it's a great value.

Bright flavors. Medium bodied. A bit of anise and licorice flavors. Has some aging potential - 2 to 3 years. A great deal for the price. Too bad I only have 1 more in the cellar!

Snappy Schild Shiraz

Apr 14, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
This is a truly wonderful wine. Very different from the bold, dark fruit bomb shiraz from this area. This is lighter, with bright cherry fruit, nice depth and medium body on the palate. This vintage is screwcap -- previous was cork. Will be interesting to compare the two in a few years.

Tart, terrible Torrontes

I read in the Wine Bible that this was supposed to be a great torrontes. Sooo not great! Very herbal, overly acidic and strange on the palate. Not impressed by any means. Reminded me of artichokes---but not in a good way. I recommend Tomero's Torrontes over this any day.

2001 - Collelceto Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese Grosso

Classic Brunello

Apr 14, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
This is a true old world brunello. Nice fruit on the palate, but also those hints of good barnyard. Not a blockbuster like some of the other 2001s, but definitely one every brunello lover should try. This is a food wine. Tannins are refined and well integrated.

Pleasant Pra Soave

Apr 14, 2008

This is not an anemic, watery soave. This soave has a bold mouthfeel and fruit and oak similar to a robust chardonnay. It's a real crowd pleaser. Has the potential to age some.

I didn't care for this wine at the winery, but once I opened it over dinner I really enjoyed it. A little hot on the palate, this wine has bright cherry fruit, a little bit of that Russian River minerality and a long pleasing finish.

2007 - Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

The BEST Sauv Blanc

Apr 14, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
This is THE BEST NZ Sauv Blanc that I've had. It has the acidity and crispness of the others on the market, BUT what sets it apart is the depth of the wine and the extremely full bodied mouthfeel. It truly sets the standard for Sauv Blanc from anywhere.

Bold Barbera

Apr 14, 2008

Superb example of Barbera d'alba. Not the same acidic profile you get from barbera d'asti. This has big black berry fruit, slight acidity, but savage tannins that will hit you on the back of the palate. It's hard not to keep going back for more.

This wine, from a 1.5 acre parcel, is a real treat. It's not a robust, in your face, fruit bomb of a zin. This zin has minerality, toasty vanilla and oak and loads of complexity. It's a zin you can pair well with chick or pork.

Nice, silky refined wine. Old world. . .earthy, subdued fruit. Very unlike WS review saying it is port-like. I highly disagree. Somewhat muted flavors. Could be that the wine is past its prime or just shut down. Will re-review when I open 2nd bottle.

Wonderful wine. Medium bodied, nice acidity, brambly with milkweed on the nose. Nice example of what CA can do with Nebbiolo. It's not piedmont, but it's a nice quaffer. Had with roasted chicken, heirloom tomatoes and patatas bravas-the acidity and fruit complimented the meal well.

What an extreme disappointment. Not at all what I expected from a new world Malbec. Extremely dry on the palate with the tannins gang tackling the palate. Fruit was completely dead. Nothing redeeming about this wine. I would steer you to the Trapiche Bonarda---if you can find it---which is big, bold, juicy and lush. This malbec is a no go. . . ruined our paella dinner.
