2000 - Phelps, Joseph Insignia Proprietary Red Wine
Insignia is always good if not great wine!

I've enjoyed Insignia several times, maybe 5 or 6 (no expert), but no matter which vintage it's always good if not great!  I found Joseph Phelps some 15 years or so back (when it was small) and I loved their Le Mistral when it was $15 bucks.  This is how I found them and their Insignia premium wine.  The 2000, as the others have reviewed it, isn't Phelps' best Insignia, but it won't disappoint you either.  It's got great balance, taste and is smooth.  Nice wine!

2000 Joseph Phelps Insignia...Not too bad!

Tasted the 2000 Insignia on Christmas eve and was pleasantly surprised.  I wasn't expecting much since it is not one of the more highly rated vintages but I really enjoyed it.  The nose was nice with hints of berries and smoke.  The taste has vanilla scents along with coffee...very nice!  I thought that it was very good for a 2000.  I enjoyed it and you may too!

Phelps-boutique taste from a large winery

This wine is delicious.  Phelps once again demonstrates why each year they are the best large winery in the Napa Valley.  It  has a dense ruby purplish color with a nose of cassis, locorice, smoke and spice.  The tannins ar supple.  It is full bodied.  Drink it now or hold for 10+ years.

Good but Overpriced

Great fruit from this exceptional blend wine.  The vanilla oak is also exceptional and well integrated into the wine and not dominating. This wine does shine in an off vintage but its still way overpriced.

Oh, the ohtwo....... yes the ohtwo. This one was a bit closed. But understandable. It has the makings for a long lived wine. Great tannin/acid/fruit meshing happening here. Smooth full mouthfeell. I guess everyone wants to see what the fuss is here. WS Wine of the year and all. Makes me wonder. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful wine, but NOT wine of the year.

Another wine that reminded me of the '98. Great nose, good minerality, great red fruit/cherry. Some tar and lead pencil? A very nice showing for the vintage indeed

An interesting wine unto itself. One dimensional with nice med dark fruit. The thing about this wine was many felt as I did that served on its own would be a very nice wine, but we are known by the company we keep and there was some stiff competition in the room wine. 5 grape blend ( I believe). Possibly The best '98 I have ever had.

Great body, with a super mouthfeel. Nice dark fruit evident. I liked the length of this one. Still from all I have recently read about this wine I feel it did not show full potential

To me this was the 'breakout' Insignia. New world Cab (Cab blend) style. Great balance. Beautiful dark fruit. Acid and tannins meshed to create an amazing long finish. Back the truck up.

This had a full round mouthfeel. There was a wonderful pure cab fruit profile of cassis & blackberry. Some tar was in attendance. Great medium weight tannins with wonderful multi dimensional structure. I enjoyed this wine

This one had some anteseptic qualities and maybe a touch of brett or v/a. I think it may be have been flawed. not rated too bad.

This was my wine of the flight. It had good fruit, nice acid and smooth tannins. My only complaint was that it was a bit 'short'. Still no slouch!

A little funky on the nose. On the palate there was an earthy-minerality that reminded me of an old Graves. There were traces red fruit. bit more tannins than the '91

Opened with old Cab qualities, dried fruit, sulphur? An decent wine and interesting to have it in the line-up and for the coming comparisons as we moved to the youngers wines

Tasted at Phelps. Beautiful dark, nearly black color. Sweet nose of black cherry, spice and some earthy notes. Fruit forward, balanced and round tannins. Can't wait to see what the 02 tastes like.

Needs More Time in the Bottle

Decanted for an hour at the winery.  Most of the same elements as the 2002, but it needs more time in the bottle to come together.  Three stars now;  4+ in the future.

Just finished off my last 1999 with friends. The blend was all that we would expect from Mr. Phelps. The quality of this Insignia produced tastey layers that made it a pleasure to drink.

The 2002's are next, but not right away...

A well put together wine with excellent colors of red and purple. the body is full. Pure. Yet it is soft on the ending.

The scents: Licorice, Smoke, Cedar, Cassis.
