This is an amazing wine. There is a certain quality that this shows off, (please bear with me if you will); this has an underlying balance of fruit, or a ledge of fruit that climbs as the wine travels to the back of the palate, to well after 30 seconds of disappearance. A smooth but intense tannin level, and the signature Mondavi acid brought up a notch. Wow. This was showing some secondary qualities already! Wonderful depth and a long elegant finish that makes you want to seek the bottle for just a bit more. (I did :)). I would love to have a half dozen of these in my cellar. Elegant, stately, and sumptuous. Did I say WOW?

Out of the gate this was somewhat funky on the nose. The palate revealed some decent fruit and the signature Mondavi mouth feel and acid level. Dark fruits of currant and black cherries. Some tar and cocoa. All in all a nice bottle that may be a bit past its prime.

Robert Mondavi lives on with his Cab

Very distinct cherry and citrus flavors. A very classic Napa Cab. Now going over the hill, but still drinkable and enjoyable; probably for another year of so.  Drink now, as the wine will probably not improve much more over time.  I had this with a delicious ribeye steak.  The fat from the steak juice harmonized with the dryness of the wine. 5-13-08

First the color struck me. Much lighter than the bottle I had six months ago. Dark core but a lot a bricking towards a translucent edge. Initail powerful nose of licorice, chocolate, leather and olives, centered around or anchored by dark fruit and plum.  The palate is very elegent and smooth with excellent balance, althoguh much lighter in the mouth then the previous tasting.  After a couple of hours the wine improved very little. The fruit opened up but the secondary nuances disapated. Now a bit of smoke and raspberry dominates the nose. In the mouth the wine is still elegent and seemless but the finish is highly disapointing being short and without personality. Other than a nice palate this bottle did little to charm. -90 points     (previous bottle 7/07) Was glorious. Big and fairly full bodied and very dark in color. The fruit was perfectly ripe, plush and velvitity.  In the mouth the wine had no hard edges. It was smooth and balanced and yet had considerable wieght and structure. The fresh herbed finish went on for over a minute. An outstanding california cabernet at its peak. -95 points

second bottle in the last 12 months. Tonight the bottle was in great shape with fill well into the neck. Dark core with a tad of lightening to the edge. Powerful mature nose dominated by spice, dirt, tobacoo leaves, a hint of leather, all with a slight green charector but really lacking focus. There is a sweet hint of candied( in a good way) red fruit. But lacking a backbone.  The nose is pungent but not seductive. in the mouth the wine is soft, smooth, and seemless. This is were I assume it gets its high scores. The finish is very spicy and lasts for about 30 seconds. If you got em drink em. 91 points. Lacking in charm and that wow factor but possesing finesse.

California Classic

Mondavi is the Classic expression of California Cab, particularly in their reserve bottling.  While lacking the terroir element one might find in a smaller batch cabernet, there is certainly enough lush, textured fruit to please everytime.  I say give it another couple of years though if you can wait.

Robert Mondavi's 1999 Cabernet reserve is really worth more than four stars, but as the choice is four or five, I must go with four.  It is not perfect, but that having been said, it is a very fine wine.  Highly recommended

Silky Smooth

This wine had nice silky fruit that had begun to integrate very well with the cedar oak aspects of this wine.  However, it was a little too much cedar and basic fruit too really have the complexity it needed to justify its price - your money is better spent on several other wines out there.  This wine had been cellared properly, and it already seems to be peaking.

Still drinking beautifully. Tastes more French than Californian at this age. Musty, complex and long finish. Should be good for at least a few more years.
