Good For Pizza

This was a very nice and acidic wine that needs food desperately to work for your enjoyment.  I guess I harp on Italian wines, and there are some great ones out there, but again they all need food to really enjoy.  Strawberries and chalky tannins stand out.

Better Than Prior Vintages

THe strawberries come through stronger on this vintage and the mushroom aroma is much more aromatic.  Overall this a much easier wine to consume than the previous vintage.

Drink with Food

Like almost all Italian wines, it needs to food to be complete.  The mushrooms and light strawberries are the best attributes, the oak and dust are the worst.  Drink now or over the next 4 years.

This is my 4th time with this and I must say it does not dissapoint. It is a bit closed at first, but then opens to a beautiful pure correct sangiovese. The color is dark amber with wonderful deep age on the edges. The nose reveals nothing as to what the palate will. Dark beautiful fruit with amazing balance, and an undertone of just the right amount of sweetness. A wonderful acid/tannin balance with hardly any tannins noticable. A big difference from last Aprils NY VinItaly tasting. This is a wonderful food wine

What a terrible deal

Seriously, this wine underperforms the competition big time. I don't have much Chianti experience, and this is why. They say a few of the best are back on track, but at this level, I think not

A nice enough wine, but not a great brunello

This wine has personality issues. It is very nice, but it hardly seems characteristic of Brunello. At very first it did, then it seemed like a very extracted New World Pinot. But that having been said it was very nice though.

Had with an assortment of cheeses and meats from Di Palo. It went well with sausage and peppers. The wine, didn't open up for a while, but it got better towards the end of the night.  Maybe an ager?

No big deal for me

Not all that impressive. I am not certain where some of the high scores from professional reviewers 90 points came from. A decent wine, good balance, although the overall impression was a little dry and dusty for me. There is some fruit in there, but it is not at all prominent. Perhaps it's a matter of taste/preference, and this wine does not match mine.

Regardless, it certainly benefited from some "air time". I would let it breathe for at least 1 hour, maybe more. Might be worth decanting.

1999 - Collelungo Chianti Classico Riserva
Major surprise from Tuscany

After spending a week at the estate in '02, we drank plenty of the Collelungo Chianti Classicos. We brought a few bottles home and I just found and opened one last night. Here's a bonus, JJ Buckley sells it. Ok,Ok so how does it taste?
Slight earth to the nose. Terrific blend of dark red fruits. Long, smooth, lingering finish. Medium weight and rich taste. For $25 this is a steal.

2005 - Bonny Doon Ca del Solo Sangiovese
great central coast biodynamic QPR
May 07, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star
i like this screwtop QPR more that a lot of randall Grahm's other more expensive reds. Black cherry, rasberry and strawberry all play a part in this fruit driven sangio. Biodynamic farming might have helped the focus on minerals and fruit as opposed to earth and tannins. We can't ask for more from a $12 wine.

2004 - Castello Banfi Chianti Classico
Worthy Italian table wine

Very fruity wine. Strong bouquet. Smooth, no harsh flavors or burn. Alcohol well hidden. Cherries? Good table wine. Tangy sangiovese. Legs ran medium slow and fat. Finish 20-30 seconds and taste sits on the front of the tongue a good while. This is the 5th day in decanter and it has held up well. Liked it and it is giving me incentive to explore more chiantis. Recommended.

Good table wine

Very aromatic wine, very smooth, good sangiovese fruit, alcohol hidden well. Not overy dry nor tannic, just a tad tart due to some acid but just about right for me. To me this is a great table wine. If I was out dining and wanted a nice inexpensive wine (figure it would be $10-$20 in restaurant) I would be very pleased if this came to the table. Very food friendly and not a mean bone in its body. Nothing complex or fancy, just very drinkable. My favorite table wine to date.

From memory. Opened for about 2 hrs. Acidic, like balsamic vinegar, fruit, smoke, chocolate? Was it somewhat closed? Enjoyable w/food. I had one 1-2 years ago and it was better then

Wow

Initially, nose of paint thinner. It's been in the 70s in NYC, so the wine was a bit too warm, so I put it in the fridge to cool it. After 1 hr, the heat went away and the nose was filled with berries and wet thick dirt. Taste of berries, earth, mouthcoating, med-full body, med finish (10sec). I think RP said it's like a baby brunello, it did remind me of one (however to note, my experiences with brunello's is limited). This is a blend of new world and old, but skewing towards the old. Goes well with food. Had with pork piccata and pastini with porcini's cooked in the style of risotto. Perfect match. Great bargain @ $13. Should get more. I think this is the 1st time I've had a Rosso, I should try more.

2004 - Poggio Antico Rosso di Montalcino
Cru Baby Brunello!

The 2004 Poggio Antico Rosso di Montalcino was excellent tonight, it is drinking really well right now! The wine was dark red and ruby at the edges. The nose enticed you with dry dusty fruit aromas intertwined with the classic notes of spice, supple fruit, and a light touch of the wood from the aging in large barrel, maybe sandalwood or cedar. In the mouth the dusty fruit, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity keep you coming back for more! Viva la Rosso di Montalcino!

Some of the bes Greve has to offer

I had this wine in a little cafe in the piazza in Greve in Chianti in April 2007.  Very smooth with a nice finish.  I generally enojy California wines but this Chianti Classico gives them a run for their money.  If you can get a bottle it will be worth the effort.

My wife and I spent three days at this vinyard and we really enjoyed this super Tuscan.  Very high quality nose, taste and finish. Great with food of course but very drinkable with or without food. Very hard to get in Texas but if you can get some shipped in it will be worth it.

This is a great example of CA sangiovese. I love this wine. It's always a great value. Medium bodied, beautiful color, great balance of fruit and acidity. Wonderful with Pizza and other Italian food.

This outstanding medium body wine is great food wine. There is a smokey berry spicey quality with a hint of licorice. I would drink this sangiovise with any food, as it will complement any meal.

Tough Call
Apr 08, 2008

Started out with a bang but finished weak - this would be a great wine with the right meal.  Better of the Italian wines I've had of recent but still finished lacking the Charisma I was hoping for.  Quality wine, just ended less than I had hoped for.  Very light cherries, light alochol, and earthy mushrooms.  Faint, Faint vanilla.
