Medium red to an orange rim. Very shiny. Nose gaind more lift as I swirled the glass, revealing aromas of dark red berries and a pleasing, sweet old wood aroma (in a good way). Nice sweetness on the palate, not as intense as some Barolos I've had and it is still pretty tannic, but the balance here works. Nice.

| 1996 - Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche Brunate |
| Ceretto's Best Barolo in at least 35 Years! |
| May 26, 2009 |
|
|
When Barolo is on, it may be my favorite wine. No other wine--not even Burgundy--can match its combination of richness, complexity and power with that ethereal, "light on its feet" quality that makes the wine feel weightless in the mouth, while marrying beautifully with food.
Sadly, for me, Ceretto's wines were never that wine, at least through most of the 80's and 90's. Too often thin, overly austere, and sometimes even slightly oxidized on release (!), they seldom merited their fame (or price!). But oh, that '96 Brunate.................
Though still very young, it has hit the first phase of maturity, when the tannins have begun to meld in, but there is still fruit from the bouquet thru the finish.
To smell this wine is to be put into such a stuper of pleasure and contentment that everything seems to stop--I (almost) didn't even need to drink it! I guess that's what the Italians mean by "Vino da Meditazione." At first, the bouquet reveals aromas of wild red berries, rose petals, and tar, but with air, hints of white truffles, mint, camphor, and almond nougat come through. On the palate (yes, I did finally succomb), a medium bodied entry of red berries, almond, truffles and mint showed none of the thin, sinewy, austere qualities of many Ceretto wines of the past. Just wave after wave of new flavors with every sip, and a laser sharp finish that lingered on and on.
So complex and complete a food was this wine, that it needed nothing else. Fortunately, our host paired it with a delicious grilled Tuna steak, served almost rare. The smoky, charry herbal flavors of the fish were perfect with the wine (like Pinot Noir and Salmon, Nebbiolo and grilled fleshy fish is a match made in heaven.).
It is impossible, if not just plain wrong, to assign a number to a wine like this, so I'll steal a phrase from Steven Tanzer (used while describing another 1996), "the full Barolo experience, in 3D and technicolor!" WOW.

| This wine is extremely rich, lush, complex, earthy, but with as much finesse something like this can have. Typical nebbiolo notes of mushroom-ie earth, minerality, but the fruit simply explodes with plumb and blackberry. |

| A Classic Barbaresco Beauty |

|
| This is a one of a kind Barbaresco with a taste of sweet and ripe fruit that I couldn’t pass up. The bouquet reveals scents of spices and flowers with just a hint of smoke and classical Piedmont asphalt (it’s much better than it sounds). The palate is supple and elegant with plum plus strawberry tones. The finish is generous and lingers. Drinking beautifully now, it will also age well. This will put a sizable dent in your pocketbook, but well worth it for a special treat. |

| This Babaresco was so smooth and delicious on its own, but it was even better with the pasta dish we had with it. For some reason the pasta helped bring out more of the wines fruit and acidity. Not cheap, but good. |

| Exotic Mushrooms are stout on the nose with a beautiful aroma of freshly cut strawberries and dried apricots. The wine is a little bit chewy on the finish but overall it was a nice surprise. |

| 2002 - Nonno Zito Nebbiolo Bien Nacido Vineyard |
| A California Nebbiolo? |
| May 25, 2008 |
|
|
Nonno Zito wines are made in true Piedmont style, but are actually part of the Ambullneo portfolio of wines. This wine is named in honor of the maker's grandfather Calogero Zito, a native of Sicily, who immigrated with his wife Giovanna. This particular wine, Giovanna-Jeanette, is from Bien Nacido Vineyards in Santa Maria Valley. The power of the wine hits you from the deep, deep garnet hue and toasty, floral nose. It possesses loads of dark fruit, chocolate, and tannins through the long finish. Another age worthy wine from this vintner, it can overpowers now but will soften with age. I love it after decanting for a full day. Selling for $60 and up, it was a steal on Wine Commune for under $30. Cheers!

| This is an excellent Barolo - a little bit pricey but still very competitive with what other wineries charge. Nice light cherries, seasoned mushrooms and light mint come through on the nose and palate. Hold for a few years/ |

| Very balanced, nose of chocolate. Luscious. Better the next day . . . earthy. Was expecting more but it was a nice enjoyable wine. Had wine some Pork stew and polenta. Maybe it'll open up more if aged or left opened for a day or so. |

| Translucent brick red in the glass. Wonderful, open nose with flowers, sweet berries, licorice and mint. In the mouth, chewy, teeth coating tannins, tart berry fruit flavors and a long finish. Great Barolo for the price. Give this at least five years. B+/A- |

| Splash decanted and breathed for 1 hour. Brick red color, fairly extracted and translucent. Explosive nose of licorice, anis, roses, ripe strawberries, mineral and mint. I waited a solid ten minutes to taste this. Very bright and balanced in the mouth. Dark fruits were present wrapped up with the silkiest, sweet tannins. Long finish. Ready at the moment, I hope I can try this in 10 years. Easily the best red I've had. |

|
| This is nebbiolo. Thin red, like some pinots. Body medium to full. Taste slightly bitter and dry. Slight fragrance, nothing overwhelming. Finish a little hot. Medium legs.Taste was more in throat and back of tongue but then moved forward on tongue and lingers there a full minute. Feel some heat on the exhale. Might not be for you but for a change of pace try it. |

| Light color which reminded me of a pinot. Decanting recommmended. Developes in the glass. Some may find it on the strong side (13.5%) but not me. Medium bodies. Some licorice flavors and slightly botter. Decanting helps a lot. No heat from alcohol. |

| Great wine but needs time |
| May 04, 2008 |

This wine has the potential to be a great wine, but needs some more time in the bottle. As we allowed it to air the fruit and earthy notes in this wine came forward. I think that had we let it sit for say another 5-10 years it would have been outstanding.
