Classic Napa nose with sweet tannins |
Nov 03, 2010 |
|
|
Review: The Trefethen Napa Merlot 2002 has a classic Napa nose of saddle, oak, dark deep red fruit. On the palate, it delivers robust, sweet tannins and adds a full smooth finish. Four stars out of five.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com. |

2006 - Yellow Tail Merlot |
Taking one for the team... |
Nov 03, 2010 |
|
|
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is called, "taking one for the team"...This is the merlot entry in the "practically free" Yellow Tail
line of Australian varietals, one of the more widely-consumed wines in
the United States, and purported a reasonably good value. Let's see
what we've got...In the glass, this looks like a serious
contender, deep mahogany/purple at the edges, and becoming opaque
within a quarter inch or so. The nose is fairly shy, offering slightly
dark, plum aromas, reminiscent of a somewhat creamy Beaujolais. On
the palate, is a solid frontal note of charred cherry, backed by a
touch of sweetness and acid. The flavor then curls up into a sort of
acidic marshmallow ball at the top of
your mouth. Not much in the way of a finish. Pleasant enough for two
stars, a plus because of its aromatic intrigues; I don't think I'd seek
it out again so it stops shy of three stars, which would have made it a
stand-out value. So, there you have it: "practically free" wine... tolerable drinking.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com. |

2006 - Santa Julia Vineyards Merlot |
Spicy, furry middle with lush fruit. |
Nov 03, 2010 |
|
|
The "practically free" Santa Julia Merlot, 2006, is from the Familia Zuccardi winery in Mendoza Argentina. In the glass it is medium light red. It displays a fruity merlot aroma which is fairly bold, with just a touch of oak.On
the palate, your first experience is a spicy, furry middle, with
pleasant acids carrying a fairly lush fruit into your cheeks. A touch
of burnt alcohol moves into the finish. Three stars out of five. Good
value given the rock-bottom price.More reviews at spiritofwine.blogspot.com. |

9998 - Tommasi Merlot Garda Vigneto Le Prunee |
Tommasi wine...red or white, you choose! |

I can't say enough about Tommasi wines, they are excellent! We were introduced to them in 2005 in Japan no less at a wine dinner and fell in love with them. I have been to many wine tastings and continue to try different wines, but I keep coming back to Tommasi. I can't even find it here in my home town so I order it and drive over an hour one way to pick it up! Try them you won't be sorry!!

2005 - Long Shadows Merlot Pedestal |
Another Insane WA wine |
Jun 13, 2008 |
|
|
2005 Pedastal..another Long Shadow wine with Michel Rolland as the wine consultant. This is 100% Merlot ( I think) and has WA Pomerol written all over it. It is new world to be sure. Nose had leather, dark fruit/black berry, dirt and even a hint of rubber. Finish was seamless with wonderful chocloate. I've had the past two vintages of this wine and this is the best. The '04 had a dirty penny finish. The '05 does not. From start to the finish it was nearly seamless and nearly flawless. This is what insane WA wines are all about. Kudos to Michel Rollland and Longshadow. This along with the Sequel and the Pirouette, they have hit a home run.

2004 - Arrowood Merlot |
Interesting wine |

This wine has a nice classic Merlot aroma, soft and polite, this wine is sincere in what it brings, and for those who are patient and dig deep there is much here to enjoy. As the wine grows into itself, the nose offers some nice complexity, adding whiffs of cream. Delicious! |

Good Merlot |

This displays an appealing ruby red color with moderate thickness. On the nose it is a nice marriage of fruit and oak, very pleasant and inviting, with hints of strawberries, raspberries, and dark cassis. |
