2004 - Fanucchi Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vines
One of the best Zinfandels Ever!

I am a Fanucchi Vineyards fan & I believe I have had some of every vintage in my cellar. Fanucchi Zinfandel ages well and I agreee with Peter the 2004 is outstanding: Deep, thick, fully ripe but as always not to excess! This is one to stock up on while you can. It is great now but it's probably not even at it's peak yet!

It is almost inpossible to find- they don't even have a tasting room, they do have on-line sales: https://www.fanucchivineyards.com/order/index.asp

2004 - Pingus Flor de Pingus
suggested by the french laundry

I enjoyed a half bottle of this wine at the French Laundry in June of 2008, while on an epicurean excursion through California's wine country.  This wine was, by far, the best wine I tasted that week, before, or since.  I am in love with the Pingus.  It paired with everything nicely, deliciously full bodied but not overpowering or heavy.

Crisp Lemony White for August Nights!

This Marlbourough white is zingy and bright with citrus, gooseberry and peachy flavors. I can't find much of a nose on it, but it explodes on the tongue and has a lucious finish. It has brisk acidity and begs for seafood, maybe a baked white fish fillet with a buttery crumb topping, or even take-out fish and chips! It is a bargain now at certain retailers, and makes my poor woman's list of really nice wines.

1997 - Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon Hommage Reserve
Wow, a 1997 That Exceeded Expectations
Aug 03, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star

i've been a fan of clos pegase wines for a long time.  particularly their "hommage" series of cabernets.  i've collected them since 1988.  they've always been absolutely marvelous.  so, last night i was shopping in the wine room and my eyes beheld a bottle of the 97.  i picked up the bottle with some skepticism because of all the negative press that the vintage had received over the past couple of years.  WTF i thought, i think i'll check it out.  so, i took the bottle inside and opened it and sniffed at the bottle edge.  no evident flaws or mustiness emanating from the bottle itself.  so, i got my favourite riedel stem and poured a taste.  WOW and blow me down, this wine was amazing.  a dark ruby red colour with a incredibly frooty nose that talked about cassis, black cherry and raspberries.  as i gave it an adventurous sip, the aromas translated seamlessly into flavours on my palate and much to my surprise, there were unctious tannins that left the flavours lingering seemingly forever...

Five Rennies outta Five on this beauty.  and i have another bottle to boot!!

2006 - Yellow Tail Chardonnay The Reserve
Light and Forgetful
Aug 03, 2008

With the stunning value of the Yellowtail Reserve Shiraz, we thought we would try it's Chardonnay counterpart, from the same year.  But this Chard was so light, so basic, so uninteresting, I could hardly think of anything to say about it.  Light body, light flavor, very shallow...no wood, no depth, no distinguishable Chardonnay flavors.  Instead of pouring the remainder down the drain I'm going to reduce it to use in a sauce.

Dark and extracted. I'm wondering if this was finished in a sherry cask, because the nose had this sherry note to it. It also had black cherry, warm dirt and vanilla. In the mouth, a monster. Spicy and quite tight. If you're buying a bottle or two, keep your hands off it for 8-10 years.

I agree that Mastroberardino does a great job with thier Lacryma but I tasted a Lacryma made by DigiOr and thought it added a bit of refining and a larger burst of red fruit and have moved to that one for now :) try it... its good too

This sang right out of the bottle! Great deep crimson color. A beautiful nose of cassis, camphor and lilacs. The palate revealed amazing balance and breed, elegance and class. Wow. There were some fresh ground coffee beans, lead pencil shavings and soy all wrapped in a multi-layered dark fruit blanket. A long smooth finish beckons one back for a top-off. Wow. Started fading after an hour and a bit, but what an hour and a bit….This is what Bordeaux can only hope to be Did I say Wow? (94 pts.)

2005 - Keever Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
Jul 28, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star

2 hour decant. Super dark crimson color. Opaque and dense. The nose gives very little: cola, blackberry and camphor. The palate has a sweet profile that is packed 10 deep with black fruits of blackberry, black plum, cassis, & black cherry cola. Slightly angular and four square. Big chewy tannins and maybe a wee bit of oak popping its head up as the vanilla is encircling the camp. This is a black hole of a cabernet for sure. Good structure. A decent finish. A well made wine indeed, but I can see it not being everyone's cup 'o tea. It's more loud and noisy and could use a little refinement & class. Time may help, but I would hate to see what fruit is here go south in that time. (90 pts.)

Next day (after 24 hour decant)- Different day.....different wine.More 'aged' color on the edges with some purple popping through. The nose shows a little more in the way of dark fruits. I sense some cassis today . The mouthfeel is bigger and so is the alcohol. It's actually more 'full' today than yesterday. with more texture and more concentration. This one needs many years cellar time. The cola bubbles in the nose are gone (yea!). I actually like this more today. It shows more of everything today. It may well be wonderful tomorrow, but I will never know....92 points.

2004 - Australian Domaine Wines The Hattrick
Flavorful, soft and supple
Jul 20, 2008
1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star 1 star
As a fan of Australian wines, this one caught my attention due to its blend.  With 49% Shiraz, 46% Grenache, and 5% Cabernet, this wine delivers a hattrick of its own.  The nose brings nice berry fruit aromas to the fore.  Letting it breathe a bit after opening allows the immediate sense of alcohol dissipate.  And then there's the taste.  Soft and round, the wine coats the palate with concentrated red fruit flavors while making this wine an extremely easy drinker.  If you can find it, give it a try.  It runs around $40 but well worth it if you're into Aussie wines.
