I bought afew bottles after I was given a bottle of 1997 Opus One in 2004. The event I was given the 1997 was a great time with good friends and family, at that time I felt it was a 4 star wine. I put the bottles in my celler in 2004 and just took one out, not as good as I remembered, it had the earthy style that Opus has and that I like, some currant, leather, black cherry, the flavors did not seem focused and not as complex as I like. Don't get me wrong it is a good wine, but not at the $120.00 I paid in 2004. I guess I will have to some how get through the other bottles, I don't think it will be that hard.

The first time I got to try Opus One - it was at a friends cellar and was the unbelievable California Vintage of 1997.  I had always wanted to try Opus One and it was kind of an inside joke for me and some friends, so when he pulled out this bottle and this vintage - I couldn't believe it.  It was an incredible experience but it was just an ok wine.  It was very silky, cedar box, cherry fruit - but it's over oaked and just too California Cab typical to consider it as 4 stars.

Opus failing to produce quality in the year of the decade.

Now, I drank this bottle one year ago.  The wine was only 9 years old (& quite pricey might I add).  This wine behaved like a wine passes it's prime.  Some fruit w/ a hint of mushroom & leather.  The wine did finish well.  I was expecting more.  I'm so happy I've kept my notes.  The wine buying public must be warned!!

very good, but worth the price?

For $150 plus a wine should be cherished on a special occasion and remebered along with the event. This wine fails to climb the mountain and say something special. It is far superior to most, but lacks the special something it needs. Maybe its like a movie that everyone loves and tells you how great it is, then you see it and you like it,but don`t LOVE it.

Exudes hype, not quality

This is unlikely to be a shock to most, but this wine, while certainly good, struck me as over-priced and over-hyped. It was a relatively good drink with decent fruit and texture and mild complexity, but overall it lacked texture and character. Not much more I really feel like saying.
